Jane's Exercise Log
Jane The "Fonda" Hamster reveals intimate workout details!

Some day, I may construct pretty graphs of all Jane's exercise data, collected by her computerized wheel. For now, here's some summaries of what your average Syrian hamster may get up to.

Data from the Modified Wire Wheel

This table contains data collected from Jane's modified wire wheel.

Distance in Exercise Wheel(km) Average (Overnight) Speed (km/h) Maximum Speed (km/h) Time On Wheel (minutes) Time Outside Cage (minutes)
Overall 1.28 1.9 4.1 41 92
When At Home 1.00 1.9 4.2 34 94
When Travelling 5.41 2.2 4.0 148 71
On Warm Days 1.23 2.0 4.3 44 80

"Time Outside Cage" refers to the amount of time Jane has spent in her playroom, or running around in her exercise ball.

All-time speed record:
5.7 km/h

All-time distance record:
6.52 km

Things worth noting:
The interesting thing is what happens when Jane The H. goes travelling -- is she trying to work off the excitement, or just trying to run back home?

My theory that Jane would get lazier when the temperature goes up (to about 28--30 degrees Centigrade) has been disproved. She has her off-days, but temperature doesn't seem to matter that much.

More To Come: The Superior Quality of Solid Wheels

When I replaced the 15 cm metal wheel with an 18 cm solid plastic wheel, I was surprised at the result. I thought the modified metal wheel worked pretty good -- and it did, compared to an open one. But it had no chance against the new wheel: Jane almost instantly doubled her top speed, and generally travels further each night. I will collect a new series of data and publish it here shortly.
